How U.S. and German Art Experts Are Teaming Up to Solve Nazi-Era Mysteries - Smithsonian

The Smithsonian and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation came together and formed the American Provenance Research Exchange Program for Museum Professionals in order to work together to help piece the timeline of priceless art which was stolen, smuggled, and sold during World War II. Karen Daly, whose idea founded this program, is especially interested in uncovering the many mysteries of a document called Battle On a Bridge created by Claude Lorrain (born Claude Gelée). It is only very recently which online discussions and information that could help Karen Daly and others uncover mysteries became apparent or even existed.

The idea of arts within a time of war is always a curious one that will leave questions for at least decades afterwards. Whether it is art created in a war, such as Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony, or pieces made beforehand that were stolen such as Battle on a Bridge, how can one not wonder at some point, "What happened to it all?" and now we have access to such widespread and accessible knowledge, I'm sure what would have taken a lifetime to discover without it will take a decade or so of research. There is just such a drastic and amazing difference and it's even more amazing to know that professionals truly care about these arts.
The unknown sequence of events which Battle On a Bridge underwent has to do with World War II, which is when it was stolen and sold.
