Niels Hoegel, a 40 year old nurse in Germany, was accused of murdering 6 patients in 2015.  He went to jail shortly after. Police did many investigations on hundreds of corpses, figuring out exactly how they died. They tested the bodies that were in the hospitals that Hoegel worked at. He worked at two different hopsitals, one in Oldenburg, and one in Delmenhorst. They recently concluded that he killed 36 people in Oldenburg, and 48 people in Delmenhorst. He admitted that he used drugs that put patients in danger so that he could practice saving them, which is illegal. He is life sentenced in prison now and the investigators say that these deaths could have been prevented if the people that were in charge had contacted state authorities. Hoegel said that when he saved the patients after illegally making them ill, it satisfied him and made him feel good, but when he did mess up and fail, it made him feel horrible. This is important for people to know so that they can understand who was responsible for all the damage of these patients. Also, it reminds us that we are all human, and that although we should expect all authorities to keep us safe, that is not always the case. We as citizens need to do our research and be careful of who we choose to help us medically, physically, emotionally, educationally, etc.

This relates to APUSH because the 5th and 14th amendment state that the government can't take away "life, liberty, or property without due process of law.." which means that Hoegel did go to court, and although he was guilty, he was given the correct procedure for his situation. He was handled correctly and was allowed to go to court to defend himself. Also, having the right from the dead patients parents to investigate their deaths bodies helped conclude the situation and justify the problem. They did not violate, following the 4th amendment.

This reminds me of the genocide that occurred to the Native Americans after groups such as the Spanish began settling ad taking over their land. It was unlawful that the groups did that to the Indians, but at the time there were no restrictions or laws prohibiting.

  1. This goes to show that one person can make a change because if someone would've reported this "practice", these people could be alive right now. It's so important to speak up and I wish people would realize that.

  2. To think this is what people have come to so they can practice medicine... this shows how poorly new generations are at communicating and how important it really is.

  3. This article brings awareness to the dangers of people misusing authority. If this man had cared about the live of these innocent people, then he wouldn't have abused his power and put other's lives in jeopardy.
