A Woman's Right - Dajia Y. Dominguez

Women won the right to vote on August 26,1920 and since then it has been a war on equality between genders. Before women had the right to vote, they were breaking rules and fighting against other women. Helen Kendrick  Johnson, who opposed suffrage, argued in the 1897 pamphlet ,"Women and the Republic" that women could achieve economically and legal equality without having to vote. She was partly right because women should be able to do anything without having to vote, but unfortunately that's not the case.
A key issue is the respecting of maternity and reproductive rights. Many companies don't understand what maternity leave is, so I'm here to explain what it is. Maternity leave is a temporary period of time before and after a woman gives birth. Maternity leave gives a moment for the mom to recover and spend time with her child. Jody Heymann, founding director of McGill University's Institute of  Health and Social Policy , has stated ," The U.S. is the only high-income nation not to have paid maternity leave, while almost all middle- and low-income offer it, too."
Our current president believes that women should be punished for having abortions. Trump has stated that, " The woman is a victim...", which makes you think that women don't have a choice on what to do with their bodies. If a woman makes a decision to have and abortion, that is her right and nobody should have a say in what she can or cannot do with her body.
"You have the right not to have to ask if you have the right," Kareen Street, a mother of two and a woman who has had an abortion. As a woman of color, it is harder to fight for your rights and to be seen as an equal. Women of color make about 56-64% of what white men make while white women make 78%. The racial and gender inequality in our country has caused too much negativity  for too long and now is the time to revolutionize.

  1. This is a post we all needed. Maternity leave is so important to both the mother and the child, and people need to understand that. It's very frustrating that women (especially women of color) are getting paid less than men even if they are doing the same exact things if not more. I think people definitely need to be more educated on maternity leave/abortion/equal pay, they're very important topics.
