Summary:
Professional baseball player Alex
Rodriguez, who plays for the New York Yankees has been sentenced to a 211 game
suspension for drug violations. This
suspension will keep him from participating in the 162 games during the 2014
regular and postseasons. Major League
Baseball’s (MLB) arbitrator, Fredric Horowitz made this ruling.
Rodriguez, who
has been in the league since 1994, will also feel it in his pocket. This will cause Rodriguez to lose $25 million
of his salary. This suspension will most
likely also cost him a spot in the Hall of Fame. Rodriguez
is fifth on MLB’S list of all-time home run leaders, just behind Willie
Mays.
This will have been the most severe
punishment in the history of baseball. This suspension highlights baseball
Commissioner Bud Selig's recent high-profile crackdown on performance-enhancing
drugs. Rodriguez says "The number of games sadly comes as no surprise, as
the deck has been stacked against me from day one.” He always thought he was a
target. Rodriguez is appealing the ruling.
Analysis: Alex
Rodriguez is one of the best baseball players of this generation and arguably of
all time, but he has made several bad decisions that have hindered his career.
It wouldn’t be as big of an issue if this was the first time he has gotten caught
using drugs, but he has been caught multiple times before. You would think
after time he would stop, but apparently he hasn’t. Perhaps he deserves the strict punishment, if
he is truly guilty. Hopefully this will keep others from making the same
mistake.
