"Panda Cub Bao Bao Makes Public Debut at National Zoo" - Devin Lewis 2nd Period
New at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C., a new baby panda debuted Saturday January 18 named Bao Bao. The cub is one of three baby panda's in the United States ( the others are female twins that were born in July and can be found at Zoo Atlanta). Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are the parents of the baby girl and one other cub that was born in 2005. Like its sibling Tai Shan, Bao Bao will be moved to China after four years to live in their natural habitat. Today there is less than l,600 pandas in the wild - the mountainous bamboo forests in China — and the environment faces threats like habitat destruction and fragmentation. Bao Bao will currently stay at the National Zoo to grow for now. Even though not born naturally, many conservationists say that captive breeding is a good way to study and preserve the species.
Its nice and heart warming to see that we care for these precious animals. I am also glad to know that the panda will be sent beck to its natural home.
