Marlise Munoz was pregnant with her and her husband's son when she unexpectedly collapsed and fell into a deep coma. After a while, the medical help at the hospital announced her brain dead. The baby was still developing, but at a dangerous, unhealthy rate. If the baby were to be born, it would have a number of diseases and conditions that the family would've had to have taken care of, on top of the mother in the vegetative state.
Munoz's family wanted the mother to be taken off of life support for numerous reasons. The medical help in the Texas hospital where she was held refused to take her off, for it would kill her and the baby.
Because of this, the family took the case to court and recently found out that the court ruled in their favor: the mother would be taken off. And she was.

I followed this on the news for a while, and I find it sad that both the mother and child died. To hear that she was kept on for so long amazes me. This was one of those tragic gray areas in the law that will no doubt have many repercussions.
ReplyDeleteIt kills me to hear things like that. My heart and prayers go out to the family.
