Summary:
Erik Munoz' pregnant wife Marlise, suffered a blood clot and layed brain dead in a Fort Worth hospital for 8 weeks. Erik Munoz sued JPS Hospital because state law protected her unborn child, and he wanted her removed off of life support because the fetus would not survive. The fetus at 23 weeks could not be born alive. The debate raised controversy about end-of-life care, and anti-abortion groups thought the fetus deserved a chance. The hospital argued it was only following the state law.
Analysis:
I find this situation very sad and unfortunate. I can't imagine how Erik Munoz feels having to give up not only his baby, but his wife. I see how this would cause controversy, because even though state law says that you have to protect the unborn child, he did not want to keep his wife on life support and knew his baby wouldn't live anyway. Making that decision period would be very difficult.
