Is TV More Violent Than Ever?- Jordan Willis 1st Pd.
A man is found decapitated, a prostitute's dead body is found painted with branches and antlers on her head, another man is beaten to death just in time for his wife to find the body and the murderer himself. These aren't true crimes, but stories of scenes found on television on a regular basis today. Episodes such as "Chicago PD", "True Detective"' and season premiere of "Justified" show such crimes within the past two weeks. This issue of violence on television has been stirring in part to recent release of a study by the Parents Television Council which stated the "some of the most violent TV-14-rated shows on broadcast TV have similar levels and types of violence as TV-MA-rated cable TV shows." "justified", a modern day western where characters were shot on a routine basis lost a fan in TV critic Willa Paskin due to its "flip" approach to violence. Fox's "The Following" was criticized by some last season for dwelling on violence, and just before its second season premiere on Sunday, producers said they were pulling back on violence. "This year it's a different show; it's a different story." creator Kevin Williamson tells reporters. Williamson said it was bloody, but he shot 11 episodes' this one was less violent.
