As the Olympics near further and further, concerns are growing about the safety of the athletes. A terrorist video was released threatening that if Russia throws the Olympics, that there will be an attack. Russia says that they know and have measures in place to handle it, in the event that some real threats are put in place. US officials do not believe this is the case and they are worried, especially for the gay athletes that have had even more severe threats put upon them.
I think that the us officials make a very good point. Russia already put out very terrible remarks on gay athletes and honestly I don't believe they will make that large of an effort to protect those athletes. Since Russia is always in an argument with another country it seems volatile for something attracting so many people around the world to happen there.
I agree I was a little nervous when I heard that the winter Olympics will be in Russia, but I don't know if I would go so far as to say there would be an attack. The whole point of the Olympic Games is for the countries of the world to set aside their differences and come together in the name of sportsmanship. That may sound naiive, but it is a time honored tradition that has been respected for centuries.
