Last Thursday, on the 16th, a large semi-truck pulled up in front of the French Parliament and dumped 3 tons of horse manure onto the road. The driver of the truck, a horse breeder, deposited the putrid pile of manure in front of the parliament as a "poop attack" protest to a new tax hie on equestrian activities. The truck driver who was later arrested stated that he wanted to show France's president, Francois Hollande, who has an all time low approval rating, an unforgettable sight that symbolizes his time in house. Hollandre, currently being speculated for an affair with a french actress, has seen more "poop attack" type protests than any other president as protests similar to the previous "chicken attack" are somewhat expected in front of the parliament. In response, the parliament has acknowledged the bold acts of protest.
I find that bold acts of protest like the horse manure protest hold great possibility for publicity. By protesting through something silly like the previous chicken attack, where dozens of large chickens were released into the parliament's plaza, many news organizations, local and foreign, can not help but cover the ludicrous story. Because of the humor appeal in these types of protests, a person, a law, a tax, or a movement can be called out in front of millions as president Hollandre was on Thursday. Although the truck driver was arrested, in a way, he won in getting his point across.
