Leslie Kelly: Pope says abortion evidence of 'throwaway culture'

Pope Francis has recently coined the term "throwaway culture," which, predictably, refers to the fact that as a society we do tend to waste many resources including the unborn child, apparently. It's not surprising that his views on abortion are like this, I mean, it's the Pope and all. The reason he hasn't really talked about it yet is that he felt we're all pretty much familiar with the church's stance on this issue and that he'd rather be spending his time sharing the more welcoming aspects of the church. I found this a rather interesting, modern thing to say. However, it could always be used as an out when he just doesn't want to talk about something. Wait, that's what it is. A really good out, too. Anyway, as unsurprising as his statement on abortion is, it's never going to not disappoint me when people don't mention the actual women involved. It's not like people just want to kill their babies. It could be that the woman was raped, that she might die during childbirth, that she simply has no way at all to take care of it. While abortion isn't something I'd personally go with, I do recognize that there are many more factors going into it besides the results of living in a "throwaway culture." Read the article here.

  1. I agree with you that at times abortion is pretty necessary. I do like that Pope's beliefs a lot lately though.

  2. I completely agree with you. There are many factors that should go into making the decision of whether or not to have an abortion. For example, the health and safety of the mother and baby. There is not going to be a simple answer to the abortion question, but I don't think women should have the decision made for them.

  3. I agree that there are many factors that go into deciding to have an abortion and honestly a definite black or white decision on this issue continues to elude, me. It is just such a complicated issue. It does sadden me that often the women involved are not considered. Despite, the popes comments, I still think most of his beliefs are a step in the right direction.(if there is one of course)

  4. I agree with you, and when it comes to what he thinks about abortion, what are you going to do? It's just still sad that people are always forgetting about the women and what they're going through.
