"Judge Approves Desegregation Plan in Little Rock" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: On Monday a federal judge approved a deal that would allow three Arkansas school districts to stop making payments to aid desegregation efforts. The lawsuit was originally filed in 1982 due to the racial imbalance in schools and in 1989 the state agreed to give money to the districts but the funding never ended. In 2011 a judge tried to ended the financing but a higher court overruled it. The new deal allows the payments to continue through 2017.

Analysis: I was a little surprised when I read this article because I didn't know that school districts still had specific funds for desegregation. I guess it makes sense since Arkansas is in the south and the case is originally from 1982, but it just caught me off guard. I also found the article interesting because here all of our public schools are based on zoning and where people live but maybe it's not like that in Arkansas if they were trying to specifically desegregate certain districts/schools.

Fun fact that I learned from this article: Did you know that Little Rock, AR was the location of the first desegregated high school? I thought that fact was pretty interesting, especially since this article is dealing with desegregation in the same district.
