Khobragade, an Indian diplomat in a bitter feud with the U.S. indicated Sunday of her "immense stress" at leaving her young family behind in New York, and vowed to clear her name of a crime she was charged with. She flew back to India after being granted full diplomatic immunity.
She left the country hours after charges were filed that she allegedly submitted false documents to obtain a visa for her domestic servant. US prosecutors claimed that Khobragade sometimes forced her Indian servant to work 100 hours per week, even when ill and without a day off.
The diplomat has expressed her anguish at leaving her chlidren and husband behind. This incident has caused a great strain upon Indian-US diplomatic relations.
This, to me, is yet another example of why diplomatic immunity is a terrible idea. There are probably an untold number of similar stories.
