In the first step of the Obama Administration’s plan to help Syrian rebel groups, US military cargo planes dropped 50 tons of ammunition last night in Northern Syria. C17s along with other types of ammunition such as hand grenades were all dropped overnight in Northern Syria to help a group of Syrian rebels known as the Syrian Arab Coalition. Details of this air mission have not been formally announced but were confirmed by an unnamed US official. The official said all of the pallets were recovered by friendly forces.
I don’t particularly agree with the idea of giving Syrian rebels ammunition because ultimately that’s getting more involved with conflicts in the Middle East when frankly I think we should butt out. We’ve created a lot of the problems over there by invading two countries, and when we don’t have money anyway and have a hefty amount of national debt, I don’t think we have any business giving people ammunition. In addition, by helping out the Syrian rebels, we’re creating more tension with the Syrian government. I don’t necessarily like the Syrian government, but I don’t think we should be making them mad either. The best thing we can do for our country right now in my opinion is fix our own country’s issues before getting involved in foreign affairs. This event is significant to US history because it discusses the United States’ involvement in foreign affairs. The US has always had a great impact on the rest of the world, and we’ve gone from having an influence in Latin and South America assisting Mexico and Texas in independence, to helping the world rebuild after WWI and WWII, to getting involved in the Vietnam War, to invading two countries in the Middle East and now to helping Syrian rebels by giving them ammunition.
