"MLK’s sister-in-law attacked in carjacking attempt at retirement home" -Leah Messinger (period 1)
On Friday morning, 83 year-old Naomi King, sister-in-law of Martin Luther King, was a victim of an attempted carjacking. She was punched twice, once when she refused to give the criminal her keys, and a second time after he couldn't find her purse. The neighbors admit that these kind of attacks are becoming common and that they need more security at their retirement home. Many of them comment on the fact that they should be able to feel comfortable enough to take a walk in their own neighborhood, but due to recent events, they are hesitant to even be outside of their property.
This is so saddening to know that people can't feel comfortable enough in an area in which they live because people these days are so sickening. Even a relative of an iconic American figure is not safe from the harsh realities of today's world. Who knows if she was targeted because of who she is and who she's related to ,or if it was merely a coincidence and the robber was just looking for someone who couldn't fight back. The real issue in the situation is getting more security in our neighborhoods to try and prevent these random acts of hatred.
