Darby McMahon Pd#9 Endangered Fur Seals

Eighty fur seals were found dead on the California coast, 8 times more than normal. NOAA reported that 42 seals were found half starving but not yet dead. They declared Unusual Mortality becuase of the number of deaths this year. It allows for more funds to be put toward the species. In the late 1800's the fur seals were nearly extinct, and today only 10,000 remain. These seals reside mostly on Guadalupe Island. Although the number of saved seals is more than the number dead, the number is still an alarming reminder that we need to pay more attention to what goes on in our oceans.

I totally agree that we need to spend more time and resources on preserving the animals in our oceans. The author AFP from Discovery News obviously agrees with me. It is a passionate article that is in favor of saving the seals. I know that many animals are becoming extinct and populations are going down for all sorts of reasons. I think we should have learned from the past, and by now should have better ways of helping endangered animals. Animals are very important to all of us, throughout history we have been able to preserve most of them. I hope that we can find out a way to save these seals and fast.

  1. It's so sad to hear about how we are doing so many thing to destroy the amounts of wildlife that we share this planet with. It's very disappointing that I believe that it will really take something to impact us directly for people to become concerned.

  2. This it is very sad to hear about any species dying but I feel that this story hits close to home due to the fact that this is an animal native to the United States. I hope it will make more Americans aware of the damage they are causing to the environment and motivate them to change.
