This week the governor in California vetoed a bill that would change the way immigrants are punished for drug charges. In California if someone is arrested for a drug charge and they plead guilty, they can undergo a drug treatment. If that drug treatment goes well then the incident can be taken off of one's permanent record. However for immigrants, even legal ones, they can end up deported.
This is a reflection of how America treats immigrants. Since the founding of the country, America has not been kind to immigrants. In the early 20th century when many people immigrated for places such as Ireland and Italy there were limits on how many people from a specific country could come to the US. When immigrants did come to the US they were generally treated very poorly. Hopefully in the future we will be kinder to immigrants.

You'd think that by 2015 the U.S. would form political statements fitting to our time. I guess some people just can't let go of the past.
