Gun control: Julie Shilling 4th Period

While many people have firm opinions on gun control, the debate is complicated, causes strong reaction and the arguments have strong supporters on both sides of the right to bear arms. The pros and cons of gun control come to the forefront in the wake of mass shootings that seem to continue to pop up throughout the nation. People in favor of a broad interpretation of the Second Amendment, and looser gun regulations, argue that the Second Amendment guarantees all people the right to own firearms for personal protection.  People wanting gun control believe the 2nd amendment does not really apply to personal gun ownership and that it really applied to organized groups to defend liberty and country and that gun controls can be enforced.

I understand both sides of this argument.  With the ownership of guns there is an increased risk of accident and there could be a situation of immediate power over anyone without a gun.  How can anyone feel safe when you see someone carry an assault rifle into a grocery store or a college as part of the open carry law. However, banning guns is not a solution either since guns are already everywhere and criminals are not likely to follow a gun ban.  If a crazy person wants to get a gun and kill a mass amount of people they are also not going to consider what any law says.  So having guns in schools could be helpful if some teachers are armed and trained to help in the event of a shooting.   A lot of lives could potentially be saved. Everyone should have the right to protect and defend themselves. However, there should be strict testing and and licensing and other laws to make it much harder to receive a gun, so not just anyone with money can posses a firearm.
