Elizabeth McCullough- Rape in America's Nursing Homes

Synopsis: A recent investigation by CNN has revealed a wealth of rape victims appearing somewhere you would never want to guess. Nursing homes. The study has uncovered not only numerous patients who claim to be victims, but stories of how these establishments have served these people and their families a great injustice. Officials of these homes have worked hard to make it almost impossible for the victims of these heinous crimes to see their attackers punished for their actions. The study has shown that over 1,000 nursing facilities have been cited for improperly handling claims of sexual abuse.

Analysis: When a family sends a loved one to a nursing home or assisted living facility, they expect their relative to be taken care of and kept safe. Centers meant to help the elderly are supposed to make their patients feel secure and comfortable in their last days on Earth. Someone staying with such an organization should not have to worry about being a victim of rape. Those who do fall victim to such horrific actions should then be able to trust the authority figures of these homes to seek justice for any wrong doing. Instead, some of the most helpless people in the human population are being taken advantage of, and their caretakers are letting it continue. The findings of this investigation are sickening.

Synthesis: This event synthesizes to the inappropriate response to sexual assault claims by officials at Baylor University. The less than adequate investigations of rape in the country and around the globe have to be fixed. Rape is beyond cruel, and the punishment for such an act should be just as harsh if not more so. People need to stop getting away with rape. It has to stop.

  1. As a society, we are only as strong as our most vulnerable members. When will we recognize the abuse?
