Emily McDougal - Mom Selflessly Carries Baby Without Brain

Summary: Keri Young was informed at a 19-week ultrasound that the baby she was pregnant with did not have a brain, which meant the baby would die very shortly after it was born. However, the mother immediately made the selfless decision to continue carrying the baby so that it's organs could be donated once it was born. Young knew that her baby would have a life, albeit a short one, and couldn't bear to terminate the life of her child, especially if it meant being able to possibly save another life in the process. The baby is due May 7.

Analysis: This article was written on Thursday, February 23, 2017, by Ali Larkin, to inform the audience about the amazing Young family. I am blown away by the decision this mom had to make. She chose to carry her child, go through all the highs and lows of pregnancy, just to have to come home without a baby. Her decision was so purely selfless and kind, which is such a contrast to all of the hatred and violence we've been seeing in our world. It's so wonderful to see an incredible situation unfold, and witness the lives it will touch in the future.

Synthesis: There are so many people who have donated organs to other people in their lives, even to strangers in completely selfless acts. Since 1988, 1,509 people have donated one of their organs to someone they did not know.

  1. I feel terribly for Young, as she was going through a time of joy only to have it cut off so short. She is a role model of selflessness and compassion.
