Audrey Gavitt- Trump makes the Oscars about him

Summary- On Sunday February 26 the 89th annual Academy Awards were held in holly wood to honor the greatest movies of this year. There were so many great nominees as the big hit LaLa land staring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Moonlight the story of a young black man growing up in Miami, Arrival, Hidden Figures, Fences and many other amazing films. But the talk the next day was not about who wore it best it was about who won it? At the end of the night the last award to be given out was for best picture, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were presenting the award and when he opened the envelope he seemed to be a little confused but then she went on and named LaLa land best picture. All was well they went up to accept the award said a speech then something out of there ordinary happened, there was a mistake! They had announced the wrong winner because they had the wrong envelope and in fact moonlight had won, they handled it very professionally and handed the award over to the rightful owners. Starting at the beginning night the host of the evening Jimmy Kimmel took many stabs at Trump and didn't stop the rest of the night, he even tweeted at the president on a large projector in front of everyone. There were also many politically based speeches speaking about immigration and discrimination, the winner for best foreign film was not able to make it due to the travel ban he was stuck in Iran. The next day trump said "They were focused so hard on politics that they didn't get the act together at the end," implying that the envelope mixup was because they were too focused on politics.

Analysis- I watched the Oscars last night and after the announced LaLa land the winner I didn't stay for the speech and i went to bed a few minuets later I came back out and I was confused and shocked by outcome. I didn't except it to happen I hadn't seen any of the nominated movies so I couldn't judge who should have won or not. This was the first time in Oscar history a mistake like this has ever happened. When Trump started complaining about how they made fun of him it didn't come as a surprise but the important thing to remember is that it is important that all these celebrities are political. People who are seen in the media and looked up to need to show that you can have a voice and you should stand up for what you believe in. Weather it be by making people laugh while doing it or standing with your country to demonstrate something important. These people have a very important role in our society, people partially worship them thats why it is so powerful that they are bringing attention and importance to these issues.  I hope they won't be silenced so more people can join them.

  1. The Oscar mix-up is certainly not ideal, but I hardly think that Trump's claim that their political statements blinded them to a mistake holds water. I certainly hope that outspoken political celebrities are not shut down.
