Yazidi women killing themselves to escape ISIS/ Maddie Hanratty / 8th period

In summary, this article by Atika Shubert and Bharati Naik focuses on the efforts of Ameena Saeed Hasan to reach out to Yazidi women who have been captured by ISIS. These women are accused of worshipping the devil, are raped and murdered without consequence to their attacker (ISIS considers it ethical under the Quran). They have no hope of rescue left, and to escape the torturous doings of ISIS,  many have already committed suicide. Hasan attempts to give hope by answering phonecalls, assuring victims they will get out, and by smuggling some prisoners out of the custody of ISIS.

When I read this article, it made me extremely angry and sad to know that women are treated this way every day. I recently went to a seminar at SMU, where victims of gendercide, child soldiers and victims of warfare gave firsthand accounts of their experiences. Being sold into slavery (usually sexual), being beaten without mercy, and many more horrible crimes were a common trend.

The article reminded me of large scale Salem Witch Trials, when women were accused of worshipping the devil and consequently were hanged. This sort of twisted reasoning exhibited by colonists is parallel to the twisted reasoning that murder, rape, and torture are excusable under the Quran (which they are not).

  1. Its horrible to think this kind of thing still happens with our advanced knowledge believe that the US should begin to step in on issues as such. their involvement could save millions. - Bernadette Negrete

  2. Sometimes I hate the world that we have come to live in. But hate is a strong word, and not everything is so bad. These members of ISIS who participate in these terrible acts are probably taught and told that this is okay and after a while they start to believe that they are doing the right thing and actually enjoy it. It's horrible, and I seriously question how a groups beliefs can get so radical as to actually think this is right. -Brenna Hale(6th Period)

  3. This makes me really upset to know that this kind of cruelty still exists. in the world. Especially because the equality of women and men is becoming so increasingly normal in places including the Unites States.
