Amber Rose stages SlutWalk in L.A., Emir Price, 9th

Since 2011, thousands have been participated in "SlutWalks" to discourage the notion that women, just about all of whom are on a daily basis trampled by the patriarchy, are at fault whenever they are verbally/physically assaulted because of their clothing or demeanor.  From London, all the way to the U.S., SlutWalks have gained notoriety for challenging the deeply ingrained societal values of how a woman should act and the air of "purity" she should have about herself. The women participating in SlutWalks however reject that restriction of expression, and march through the streets to yell the truth out at the top of their lungs. Now, these activists are possibly gaining a very significant figurehead.

October 3rd, 2015, model and actress Amber Rose lead one of these SlutWalks, feeling as though the ugly labeling of slut has been a major part of her life and career. At a young age, Rose was a stripper and had to endure the harsh lifestyle that can come with that field. She was also fiance to rappers Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa in the past, having derogatory remarks thrown at her from both of them when their relationships ended. Recently, Rose showed up at the VMA's with her friend Blac Chyna, a fellow model and businesswoman, dressed in clothes covered with derogatory female-coded insults, showing the world they won't be ashamed of their lifestyles or sexual choices, nor will they allow the words society uses to persecute them hurt.

More power to these women. We've got too many ways to call a woman out her name because of what she does with her privates or how revealing she dresses, but most people struggle to think of more than five for a man. It's an ugly double standard that I'm happy Amber Rose and these other women going on SlutWalks challenge. There's a long way to go with female liberation, even after the struggle for women's suffrage, and this is a good place to work on.

  1. Diminishing the double standard between sexes has become a very prevalent goal. I'm glad that we get to see acts like these happening at a young age so that maybe by the time our generation has grandkids, words like "slut" will be a thing of the past.

  2. Tristin Manus 8th---I agree with the comment above me, if we get rid of that double standard between genders and this generation raises their boys and girls the same, we can reach to our goal of equality between the sexes. This relates to the Wome's rights movement and shows that this movement is still alive decades later.

  3. The "slutwalk" is a way to stand up for something that people believe in. If people wanna show off a little skin then that's fine. No one should be called a slut because of that.
