Violence Towards Transgender Women by Shelby Linker, 8th period

In the U.S., 20 transgender women have been killed in 2015 alone. Recently the trans community has been getting a lot of attention, both good and bad but this violence didn't just start happening. These sort of crimes have been happening for probably as long a the trans community has been around. Not only have they been targeting transgender women but also those of color.

This is very unsettling to me. Most of these crimes have been hate crimes and it's horrible to think that someone has so much hate towards a group of people that they will go out of their way to murder a person that they don't even know (or maybe they do know) just because of who they are. I honestly can't understand how it would feel to be confused about my own gender but I know some people who don't think of themselves as the gender they were born as and they are wonderful people at I love being around. This is also one of those things that you can't really help, it's one of those things that you're born with so it's not fair or right to shame someone about it, much less commit violence towards these people. This might be a very dark comparison but it kind of reminds me of the KKK, how they would commit horrible crimes against people of color because of their skin, something someone is unable to control. If only the world could be as accepting as Booker T.

  1. i can't really imagine to be in the role that the transgender community is. i admire them for being so strong and to sticking to who they are even through all this good and bad attention. you're right its very unsettling that someone could be so fueled with hate to a group of people that has done nothing offensive to them but yet they still target and kill them.

  2. People like to target those who are different from them and unfortunately the negative attention has gone towards the transgender community. I think it's sad that people are unable to accept other people based on the way they were born. In the end we're all human and we will always have our differences.

  3. People who target transgender people and any other type of people who are harassed or oppressed are wasting their time and are ignorant. People need to be more accepting. It's just disdisrespectful.

  4. I cannot put myself in the shoes of a trans WOC, ever. They are practically hunted by hateful people. Our society has been changing, becoming more accepting, but this violence needs to stop now. We don't have time to wait for people to change their transphobic opinions. This is an issue our society really needs to focus on right now. -Nora Bracy
