The attack happened Friday along the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii at a popular surf spot called Leftovers Beach. Witnesses say that the victim was sitting on his board waiting for the next wave and the shark came and attacked him from underneath. After taking a health nip at the surfer the shark was finally sent away by multiple hits of the victim's board. A fellow surfer witnessed the whole thing and immediately came to the victim's aid. Colin Cook (the victim) was quickly transported to a near by hospital. Cook lost the majority of his leg but at least he didn't lose his life.
After watching Shark Week a couple of years ago I came to the conclusion that I would never again go into the ocean deeper than my waist. This of course is a pretty irrational fear considering that shark attacks are so rare and isolated. It's been proven many times that sharks have absolutely no desire to munch on humans. They much prefer fish and other ocean things. My guess is that the shark probably mistook the surfer (from the bottom view) as a seal which is very common. The whole thing is an extremely unfortunate event. I'm just thankful that the surfer survived and is on the road to recovery.

That's terrifying!! Surfing takes a lot of bravery. The ocean has always scared me.
ReplyDeleteGlad the surfer dude didn't lose more than just his leg, and hope that you can get over your irrational fear.
ReplyDeleteThe ocean is a dangerous place, and I've never been comfortable in deep open waters either. However, I think stories like Bethany Hamilton's (Soul Surfer girl who lost an arm via shark while surfing) should serve as inspiration that you can't let something like that keep you out of the water completely. -Sophie Kurzius (8th)
ReplyDeleteSurfing seems so gnarly. I wish I could surf, but maybe not after reading this
