SeaWorld by Kennedy Park

SeaWorld wants to expand the killer whale pool from 5.8 million to 9.6 million gallons. It was decided, despite the great efforts of animal activists for SeaWorld to release its whales into the wild, that the 100 million dollar plan would be approved. This however is on the terms that SeaWorld can no longer breed any more whales. SeaWorld states that  "Breeding is a natural, fundamental and important part of an animal's life," the statement said, "and depriving a social animal of the right to reproduce is inhumane." ALDF executive director Stephen Wells said that  "It is cruelty pure and simple to keep large, intelligent, complex and social sea mammals in tiny tanks and force them to entertain consumers whose dollars would be better spent on conservation of orcas in the wild." With one side saying that it's good that the animals are getting a bigger tank and the other saying that it's animal cruelty to keep captive something that belongs in the wild, everyone will be waiting eagerly to see what SeaWorld does.
I think that this is indeed animal cruelty. I once saw a picture showing that the SeaWorld parking lot is bigger than the tank for some of the largest creatures in the world. I think that SeaWorld, while providing entertainment for a day seems nice and fun, it isn't worth the overall risk of health towards a dying species. The sad thing is that even if the whales are release into the wild, many of them would soon die due to the fact that they have been in captivity their whole life. I agree that "no whale will be happy in a bathtub" no matter what size.

  1. SeaWorld is absolutely disgusting. I've been there once and I will never go back. The sanitary state of the park is horrible. I'm surprised an animal health organization hasn't come to improve the living spaces of the sea creatures. -Sophie Kurzius (8th)

  2. I've only been to SeaWorld once but i was too young to remember. Honestly, I'm glad i don't remember. What SeaWorld is doing is absolute animal cruelty. It is terrible and disrespectful. No animal no matter what size, species, or behavior, deserves to be held captive for greedy people to many millions off of. Madeline Jones 4th period
