Group of White People Charged with Illegal Gang Activity: Bennett Copley - 8
A Confederate heritage group was prosecuted for violating Georgia's Street Gang Terrorism Act. The group had a "confrontation" with a group of african-americans on the street and it lead to the charges against the heritage group. I think that this is a solid step towards true equality, being that there are white people, specifically southern, suburban people, being charged with in violation of a law that was put into place in order to control street gangs, which are generally associated with more urban environments. Although this is probably not the sort of equality that the big figures of the civil rights movement would have had in mind, seeing as I would imagine that they would have wanted not for white people to be punished for this, but for african-americans to stop being punished simply for being african-american, it is progress, and progress is always good.

Recently, there has been so much violence in the world, especially, race motivated violence. It is so sad to see, but progress is progress so that's good.
ReplyDeleteSeeing how it usually is African-Americans targeted for crimes it's nice to see a change of focus of once. I wonder what this means for civil rights movements in the future. - Juliet Nelson 9 period
