California and Assisted Suicide by Shelby Linker, 8th period

Today, California's' governor, Gov. Jerry Brown, signed a bill that legalized assisted suicide. California is now the fifth state that allows doctors to prescribe life-ending drugs to a patient.

I'm lucky that I can say that I haven't felt so much pain that I've decided that ending my life would be the best option but I think if I wasn't going to survive much longer and those last few days would be filled with pain, why would I try to delay what would be inevitable? I'm not saying that I'm pro life or pro death, I'm saying I'm pro choice. It's as I've said in some of my past articles and some comments but I'll state it again, it's not my place to tell someone else how to live their own life. If they believe that they can't endure anymore pain and it's already been revealed that they will die soon, would you really want your last days of life filled with pain? Or if they want to feel every aspect of life and death then I will support that as well. Now the problem of if the patient can't make logical decisions has come up and there's not much I can really say about this, the patient could be unaware of what their saying but the doctor should use their best judgement and if possible, have them treated and/or tested to make sure they're in a stable condition to be making such important decisions as this. This is another one of those controversial topics like gun laws and abortion and it's good to learn where you stand on these subjects so you can learn more about yourself and your morals.

  1. you're absolutely right. everyone should be entitled to their own opinion and its not anyone's place to tell other people how to live their lives. if the last moments are going to be painful, then its up to you how you want to live them.

  2. Yeah if they are in that much pain they will find another way and since the doctors have the resources its nice to give someone a choice

  3. I totally agree with you. We will never know what position a person is in or what they are experiencing so there is no way we can tell them what they can or can't do.

  4. I'm not really sure if I am for this decision. I enjoy when people do their own thing but if a doctor is PAID to help end a life I'm not proud to say I'm American. -Cassidy Jones
