Who doesn't love waking up in the A.M. with the thought of a bowl of Cheerios and milk waiting to be eaten? -- the thought of the sweet, honey infused goodness. I know I do. Well not that isn't possible. But why? Adriana, have they been discontinued? I would be completely unable to write this if that were the case so no, they have not been discontinued. They are recalled, though. This means that they literally had to go store to store and take Cheerios boxes off of the shelves and make them unable to sell, they did this with 1.8 million boxes! Devastating, I know. The reason behind this whole hoopla is that the General Mills was found guilty of false advertising. !! ah. Do not fear, Honey Nut Cheerios are not made of some animal's fecal matter or anything disgusting like that, they simply contain wheat.
Why is this a big deal? Well, I personally do not believe it is but a lot of Americans partaking in different diet fads do. The boxes read "Gluten Free" and so people who do choose to eat gluten free thought they were in the safe if they went with these o-shaped flavor clusters in the morning. The company has promised to fix this advertisement slip-up and that nothing of the sort will happen again. I do personally indulge in gluten and in Cheerios, since cereal is my favorite food and so although they are currently recalled I will probably still have the cereal at the top of my grocery list.

LOVE the photos you included in your post! Try to find an event in history that this relates to. You could say ALOT about the Progressive Era and the creation of the Food and Drug Administration and why that might be important to consumers today.

ReplyDeleteWhile I do believe that the "gluten free" label is being excessively abused, there are diseases where people simply cannot eat gluten. Had it not been for these certain diseases, there probably would've been no incentive to look into the matter anyways.
Gluten free is a serious label, and I know many people that cannot have gluten because of dietary needs. I do however understand your frustration on the issue.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they took them off the shelves, but hopefully they just reboxed them. Not doing so would be really wasteful.
