US Crime Rates Rise- Ellen Fritz

In 2016, the US crime rate rose for the second consecutive year. These violent crimes, according to the FBI have been spurred by the shootings in Las Vegas and Texas, and violent crimes in Chicago and Baltimore. The overall crime rate in the US has risen by 4.1%, and the rate of violent crimes resulting in homicide has risen by 8.6%. These violent crime rates have not only risen in large cities and concentrated areas of people, but also in rural areas with generally low populations. The authorities released the information that the most commonly utilized weapon of these crimes was a gun, used in 4 out of five crimes.
This rise in the crime rate scares me, just as it would scare anyone else. The citizens of a country should not be afraid of others or the police, but should feel protected by the authorities. I'm still confused, as many people are, as to why stricter gun laws haven't been but into place. It's blatantly obvious that if there were stricter gun laws that people with severe mental illnesses or previous court charges would not be able to access gun as easily. Come on, Trump, we're all disappointed here.

  1. we should begin having guns need a biological identifier built in, so the only way a gun could be used was if the fingerprint of the user allowed them access under restrictions, information, and allowed actions.

  2. I completely agree with you they really need to be more strict on gun control because of the increase crime rates.

  3. This is crazy! How can people still argue that stricter gun control laws aren't needed when crime rates are rising and 4/5 out of the weapons were guns??

  4. I really hate knowing that this is what our country has come to. As a child, I always saw America as a safe and secure country, but now that I'm older, I see that isn't even close to true.

I find it very interesting that the weapon in 4 out of 5 crimes is a firearm yet our president says gun control isn't the issue its mental illness.

  6. Dont talk abot this like it’s a trump issue unless you want to forget about the 31 Mass Shootings Under Obama’s care(get it). Gun control is something that needs to be debated. We don’t need rash, strict laws right away. We don’t need “far rights” abusing them and causing more terrible events. We need a genuine debate up there in DC, and we need to come to an agreement. Immediate action never works in a country of this scale. People need to slowly warm up to ideas and find out if they like them. That’s why we have a democracy. Hillary Clinton called for immediate action. Look where that got her.

  7. Just because it happens under a president, doesn't mean its only his fault. Stricter gun control takes time and wouldn't completely eradicate the presence of crime.

  10. Some more, and stricter efforts need to be made when it comes to gun control. There has been so many crimes and mass shootings and none of that would have happened if there were stricter gun control laws.
