The article that I read this week talks about the surge of thousands of migrants to Slovenia. The ongoing European migrant crisis is facing continuous challenges as migrants are fleeing wars and poverty in the hopes of finding a better life elsewhere. The recent closure of Hungary's border with Croatia from the flow of migrants, has caused thousands to turn to Slovenia as an alternative. This redirection has not only caused a surge of migrants entering Slovenia, but has caused many women and small children to travel through harsh conditions like the cold and rain. Although Slovenia has the ability to accept 7,000 migrants a day, Slovenian officials can only permit up to 2,500 migrants a day. With capacity and safety of the country and migrants being of major concern, the Slovenian government has their hands full with this crisis.
Analysis- This article is very alarming to me because it is one of the many articles that I have seen regarding this issue. This problem is affecting many countries and is putting several issues like poverty, wars, safety, and the heavy influx of migrants, into the spotlight of world news. I can relate this topic back in US history to the Cherokees and the Trail of Tears. In the ambition of westward expansion, the US experienced many encounters with the native people of the land they were claiming. In one very unfortunate instance the US even forced the removal of the Cherokees from their ancestral homelands, notoriously known as the Trail of Tears. During the Trail of Tears, 4,000 Cherokee people died due to the cold, disease and starvation they faced on the march. I connect this article with the Trail of Tears because in both cases many people are leaving their homelands and facing harsh conditions and circumstances on their journey. While the reasons behind the migrants fleeing are much different than the forced removal of the Cherokees, both the people of the Trail of Tears and the Migrant Crisis are similar in some aspects. Many people have died in both events, the lives of the survivors in both events are shaped by their journey, and their world as they know it will never be the same again.
