In
Daniel Nussbaum’s article he discusses where documentary filmmaker, Michael
Moore, stands on gun control and political issues in America. The
documentarian, on Friday at the New York Film Festival had a few words to say
after the screening of his new movie Where
to Invade Next. “I am, as I said in the film,
an optimist. I’m not a cynic, I don’t think it’s all f***ed,” said Michael, to
the audience after his screening. “I feel like that sometimes, especially when
things happen like yesterday’s shooting in Oregon, what do we do about that?
[President Obama’s response] was awesome, and he inches his way toward that
place where he needs to go. I hope he goes there. He’s got a year left.” He
continues to quote Moore on what he says about the Newtown shootings and the
Presidential election.
Daniel’s article does something
interesting. It brings forward a person in the creative world, to the political
world, sharing his views on the mass shootings and politics. Most people who
are famous tend to shy away from politics, afraid that it’ll cause suffering to
their works, but because Michael’s works are political or statements, sharing
his views makes his work stronger. Gun control has been an issue since our
country was made. The second Amendment has been a part of our Constitution
since the American Revolution, which is why Americans are so sensitive about
their firearms. Our country has grown up with them always being a part of our
lives like how children these days all have iPhones. Take away the iPhone and
they cry. Put restrictions on their guns and they protest. However, its
important to realize when something becomes a problem, and how to fix it. Guns have
become a problem, its time to fix it.
