historic flooding in the swamps of the Southeast by Sam Stromness

summary:
Catastrophic downpours have been effecting the Southeast, particularly the Carolinas, for the past week. The storm has been breaking records, causing more precipitation than ever seen before, it is being called a "once in a 1000 years storm." The rain has caused significant damage, making many of the effected areas unsafe. The rain has caused significant monetary damage, injury, and death and has essentially caused an infrastructure meltdown for those affected.

Analysis: Natural disasters have been key in many Historic events. Disasters, like the one in the Southeast right now, have destroyed entire civilizations and have shaped history as we know it. Natural disasters have a tendency to shut down, if not destroy, what man has made. For example the massive hurricane over Galveston in the early 1900's devastated the city and is the deadliest known natural disaster in history. Like the Galveston hurricane, the storms in the Southeast right now are significant to History because it has caused large and difficult to repair changes to the way the people in the area function and communicate.

  1. Excellent! I appreciate the synthesis in your analysis of this article! One more thing to think about: A disaster that happened only 10 years ago and has already made it into our curriculum and textbooks... Hurricane Katrina. Why was this natural disaster so important and why did so many political issues arise after this infamous storm? Have we learned the lessons of history?
