Goodbye Redskins! Alejandra Hernandez 6th period

Summary:The article I read was about how the term "Redskins" will no longer be used as a mascot, nickname or team name, anyone who is currently using it has until 2017 to change it. This law was passed by Jerry Brown, governor of California. The article also mentions the state Oregon and Wisconsin passing similar laws.

Analysis:This law is ,in my opinion, a step to more equality between many races and ethnicities. The term Redskins can be offensive to some Native Americans and it is disrespectful to use someone's race or ethnicity as a school name or mascot. This law reminds me of when Native Americans had to suffer the Trail of Tears, however this time around they are trying to erase discriminations instead of being discriminatory.

  1. I've never realized that the term "Redskin" is derogatory, but it makes complete sense now that I think about it. It's great this law is being passed in some states because it's one step closer to end racial discrimination/prejudice against Native Americans.

  2. I too never thought of it as that but I'm glad that we are taking every step toward racial equality.

  3. I always thought this was weird but it is so good that they are changing it and I don't want to see that team in the news unless it is to announce their new name and mascot

Im really glad that this racial slur will be taken out of ordinary vocabulary. It is an unexceptable instance of racism.
