Adriana Hinojosa, Period 8, MLKJr>KKK

Racism is something that is still super prevalent in our world today. Martin Luther King Jr.'s mission  was to get the world to be one without hate especially towards African Americans. From the mid 1800s to today there have been groups devoted to hating the African American race and other non-White races, the Ku Klux Klan is one of these. Over the years they have gained an awful reputation for the way they have chosen to discriminate, with vulgarity and violence. Now, in the state of Georgia, there will be an MLK Jr. tower put on top of a mountain that used to be used as a meeting place for the members of the Klan and a place where they performed cross-burnings. This place in Georgia is still a place many Confederates call "home". This act will definitely make a lot of people angry or even disgusted but for the people who are all for equality, as myself, it is an awesome and empowering move. To physically put an MLK memorial atop a place that goes against everything he believed in is, to me, a symbol. We are slowly becoming more accepting of all people. The key word in that last sentence is slowly. I will not blind myself in saying that our development as a nation is clearly successful. Violence, for example, is worse now than ever. As much as I hate to accept that, the world is forcing me to accept it everyday when I read the news. But I do believe that overall we are heading a positive direction when it comes to equality. I hope that one day this MLK memorial will not only be a symbol, but a reality.

  1. I think putting a memorial up is probably one of the best responses to racism we can have that can be accomplished in a foreseeable amount of time. Even if it doesn't contribute greatly to civil rights movements and abolishing racism it's a step in the right direction, and like Adriana mentioned, hopefully it will not only be a symbol, but a reality. - Juliet Nelson 9 period

  2. Heather Hatch 8th period: I agree as well, I feel that putting up a memorial in such a significant and powerful place will get the attention that the subject needs. Who knows maybe doing something as bold as this could even persuade people to look at things a little differently.

  3. Bob Cummins, 6th Period- Yes this is very symbolic and wonderful that this memorial is happening. It's also terrible that there are people who are still racist and hold hate meetings. They'll peter, but there will always be some kind of prejudice in the world.

  4. This is so awesome, to be putting up this memorial in that specific spot. It takes power away from some of the unaccepting people of the world. Slowly but surely, I think we're making a change for the better. -Nora Bracy 5th
