Author: Jeremy Diamond
Place and Time: Washington, February 15, 2015; the current view and politically dominated location established a not only critical demeanor but also set the tone of urgency towards military authorization due to the over looming threat of ISIS
Prior Knowledge: Due to the constant news reports of ISIS I had a background of the terrorist group and of the military threat they provided in general due to their gruesome tactics. This background helped concrete a more bias view towards the organization and a need for military protection thus providing a desire for military protection provided from the president.
Audience: This article was written for the general public who feels the need for a military protection from ISIS and sees them as a national threat. The article itself was a negative influence on the audience due to the fact that it now gives people who feel threatened nervousness about the political stability towards the subject of war and the debating views of the president with Congress.
Reason: The article was written to display the turbulence within the government on how to handle ISIS and how much military authority should be given to the President, a debate that has been set since the beginning of the nation that originated from the colonist’s disdain toward the king, who they deemed a tyrant and all powerful.
The Main Idea: The president is now butting heads with Congress, this opponent force is largely headed by the Republicans. Regardless of the lack of agreement towards the issue, ISIS still represents a large threat toward the security of the nation and needs to be handled. Whether the plan provided by the president is the ideal choice or not a decision needs to be made to give the nation comfort.
Significance: This debate takes into consideration the Constitution, which lists the president as the commander in chief of the nation and gives him control of the army but also gives Congress some control. This embodies the seemingly everlasting difficulty between the different branches of the government.
