"Over 100 whales dead after washing up on New Zealand beach" - Addison Norman pd. 2

For the last day volunteers and workers have been struggling to race large sea mammals out to open waters. A large group of whales have been stranded on a beach off the coast of New Zealand. The land is called Farewell Spit which is apart of Golden Bay. The bay is known to have large ocean life stranded because of its location and the movement of ocean currents. Being on the beach is life threatening to the whales because the shallow waters inhibit the whales to move and breath as normal. At the first sighting of the stranded whale around 140 volunteers floated the whale back to sea. This is often a dangerous job considering the massive size of the mamamls. By the time the volunteers floated the majority of the whales to open water 24 whales had died. Unfortunately after making it to sea the whales swam back to Farewell Spit to be stranded once again. This time a greater number of volunteers and government officials were called to help. So far 103 whales have died and the volunteers continue to work with around 60 whales.
The conservation of animals and wildlife is important to maintaining the natural balance of earth. This race to save the whales is similar to the acts of Theodore Roosevelt during his presidency. Teddy Roosevelt was the president to create national parks to keep the natural beauty of the US. Roosevelt create Yellowstone, Big Bend, and The Grand Canyon National parks.

  1. It's a good thing that many people are volunteering to help and I hope we can get the situation under control as soon as possible.
