Columbus Day often makes people think of Christopher Columbus and the 3 ships he brought with him to claim the "New World". But for the first time, certain northern cities began to recognize this oldish as "Indigenous People's Day". They decided to change the focus of this day from Christopher Columbus, to the people he encountered in the New World and their future descendants. Although many peoples wouldn't allow Columbus Day to be replaced with Indigenous People's Day, they agreed that it could supplement it. Seattle City Council voted to reinvent the holiday to celebrate "thriving cultures and values of indigenous people in our region." In many cities, Columbus Day is a celebration of Italian- American heritage, and many from those cultures were deeply offended when hearing that Columbus Day's meaning could be altered. The celebration if this day began in 1892, and today 16 states don't recognize it as a public holiday. How do you think we should celebrate this holiday?
I thought this article was very interesting. I see how the thought of changing the meaning of this day has been discussed. Many people believe that it isn't right to celebrate Columbus for "founding" the new world, when the natives have been living there long before them. this is relevant to what ever been learning in APUSH, relating to the colonization of this country by Europe. I personally believe that we should have to separate days. One recognizing the Indigenous people for being the first to found this new land that we now live on and one day recognizing Columbus for helping to shape the land when he brought European colonization. The colonization of the new people helped to bring about trade and allowed to Americas to connect with the rest of the world. I believe because of the actions of both people, we should be eternally grateful.

I agree with you. They should not change the name of the Columbus Holiday because America has been celebrating it for many many years. Possibly adding a new holiday to recognize the indigenous people would be a good solution so we can have a day to commemorate them and how they shaped America.

i think Columbus day shouldnt be celebrated at all. Enslaving people and cutting off ther nose, hands and feet just in search for gold is never a good thing. All the things he did were for personal gain not exploration or knowledge. In my eyes hes a dishonorable man who just caught a break.
