ConforMIS, co-founded by Dr. Phillip Lang reported that they are making knee replacement implants that will be tailored to each individual patient. They are able to do this through "CT imaging, special computer software and 3D printer technology." New research shows that knee replacement is the most common joint replacement worldwide and that a quarter of patients aren't satisfied with their results. Dr. Lang wanted to fix that. He claims that his new innovation will reduce bleeding and swelling in the area and that there will be a "quicker return to range of motion for most patients." The implants are covered by insurance making it so that the lifesavers can be obtained by most anyone. ConforMIS is planning on making other joints, including shoulders and hips.
This article was written by Dr. Mallika Marshall of CBS Boston on October 17, 2014 at 11:21 PM. I thought that this article was very interesting. I'm glad to see technology being used to improve the lives of so many dealing with knee problems. I think that this is going to be a huge breakthrough in the medical community and will hopefully inspire more innovators to expand on the science behind this idea.
