Mom Accused of Babies' Murders Will Appear in Court; Margaret Canady 2nd period

Megan Huntsman, a woman accused of killing six of her seven newborn children, will appear in court and be subject to a preliminary hearing this December. After the hearing, the judge will determine if there is enough proof for a full trial.
Huntsman is currently in jail for 6 counts of first-degree murder, with a $6 million bail. Police say over a span of 10 years (1996-2006), Huntsman strangled or suffocated her infants before storing them in her garage. 7 total infants were found in the garage after a search warrant was obtained; the last infant was determined to be stillborn.
The babies were found by her estranged husband, Darren West, on April 12, as he was cleaning out the garage. West is not considered to have played a role in the deaths, even though they lived together during the 10 year period.

It's hard to comprehend such a horrific (and strange) event. What kind of mother is capable of killing her own children? The article stated that Huntsman may have been addicted to methamphetamine, and did not want to care for the children. Perhaps harsher restrictions need to be placed on prescription drugs, and as a society we need to be more aware of the implications of drug abuse.
In addition, if Huntsman did not want the children in the first place, perhaps she should have been more informed on the subject of birth control and/or adoption. I don't understand how her husband was able to live with her and not realize that she was pregnant, or be concerned as to what was happening to their newborn children.

  1. This is seriously disturbing. I only wish that the father discovered what was going on sooner...

  2. I agree with you in saying that if Huntsman had no desire to care for her children then perhaps she should have thought of that before deciding to give birth. Adoption would have been a much better choice, considering that if the children were placed in the care of other parents, they would still be alive. Hopefully once she is in court, justice will finally prevail.

  3. I agree with you Nina. She definitely should of thought about that before deciding to have this children or even birth control. The fact that there were 6 babies though is crazy to me.
