An editor of 'The Square" documentary, Sanaa Seif, was arrested in June and has now been sentenced to three years in prison for protesting the new law. The new law had been made in November 2013 that stated that political gatherings had to be approved by security forces. Cairo authorities, where she was arrested, has been urged by Amnesty International to release Seif and the other activists that were arrested for protesting. The Square documents Egypt's revolutions in 2011 and 2013 by the views of young activists. It caused controversy in Egypt and the first screening wasn't advertised.

I think that it is absurd that people and getting sentenced that many years in prison just for protesting. It's understandable, because yes they did break a law, but three to fifteen years? They could have been fined but the government is different all over the world. I think that a lot of it had to do with the documentary.

  2. Well, yes, it's 'understandable' for Egypt, yet if you look at the principle of the argument through the eye of American standards, it's not so. Protesting one's own rights and freedoms is natural, whether in formulated groups, or through writing, or whatever.. It's natural to expect the freedom of living in one's own way in life, and many countries don't give this to their people. Although I definitely respect other country's standards and differences from our own, I believe that having the right to speak out is something that is necessary, and being sentenced three years like this person is shows the uncertainty with which the government views these kinds of groups, and the risk they pose to this controlling and manipulative system that's been created.

  3. Unfortunately for the people in egypt they don't have the same laws protecting their rights like we do it america. Like our first amendment would have protected this protester had it been here.
