Supreme Court Rejects Same-Sex Marriage Appeals (Oct. 6): The U.S. Supreme Court declines to
hear appeals of rulings in Indiana, Oklahoma,
Utah, Virginia,
and Wisconsin
that allowed same-sex marriage. The move paves the way for same-sex marriages
in the five states. In fact, Virginia announces that unions will begin that
day.State legislatures have been deeply involved in the public debates about
how to define marriage and whether the official recognition of “marriage”
should be limited to relationships involving one man and one woman or that
same-sex couples should also be entitled to “marriage.” State legislatures have
gone both ways in this debate: most states have enacted “defense of marriage”
laws limiting marriage to relationships between a man and a woman. More
recently, state legislatures and courts have made decisions to allow same sex
marriage.
It
is a shame to see that this battle still continues. Unfortunately it will continue
as long as enough people stand up to stop it. The day will come where most
places in the world will accept this. We should be done with discrimination,
but sadly it still continues.
