The Facts of Life and Death with Ebola by Corran Nolan

In Ebola treatment in the West, there have been relatively mixed results, and while some, if not most patients survive, some don't. There are a few things which determine the chances of the infected surviving the virus. One of these is the time of treatment and the hospital. Those who have survived were treated at hospitals prepared for highly infectious diseases such as Ebola, and were treated quickly after they found out they had it. Those who didn't were among the people who died. "Aggressive rehydration" also positively affected the individuals who survived, as Ebola dehydrates you very quickly. Those who survived also underwent Plasma Transfusions from people who had already beaten the disease, and had antibodies to defend against it, crucial in recovery and survival. However, throughout all of this, no experimental drug has been shown to be a sure-fire cure, with mixed results attributed to those who took them.

This article, and the Ebola situation in general, is very similar to other outbreaks which occurred in the US' history, such as the Spanish and Swine Flu outbreaks, and the SARS outbreak. These are important because they show the rapidly advancing medical technology and standard of living, with each outbreak spreading less and less, and taking less and less lives. America has one of the highest standards of living in the world, and, for the most part, always has, a very important part of our history and culture is our seemingly on-the-top placement in that catagory.

  1. The general public often gets caught up in the hysteria of an outbreak of a disease. Hyperbole and fear only add to the confusion of the situation. People need to know the true facts of Ebola, like the ones this article goes over, and be educated and sane in their concerns.

  2. Even though ebola is a dangerous disease that has no cure the US has good equipment that can help combat it as mentioned in the article as well as if people keep a level head and don't panic.
