Up to 1,000 people will be questioned prior to the start of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's trial, which is set to begin January 5, 2015. U.S. District Attorney George O' Toole says that questionnaires will be used to narrow the large group into a pool of about 100, from which 12 jurors and six alternates will be selected. Tsarnaev has been charged for bombing the 2013 Boston Marathon at the finish line, which killed three people and injured more than 260 others as a result, in addition to several other charges attributed to the manhunt the Thursday evening and early Friday morning after the bombing occurred. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include conspiracy and using weapons of mass destruction. Tsarnaev is scheduled to attend the last status hearing before his trial begins, which takes place on December 8th. This will be his first public appearance since his arraignment in 2013. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
Tied into more recent U.S. history, the juror pools in the James "Whitey" Bulgar and Jodi Arias cases had to be significantly cut down. In the Arias case, a lot of potential jurors were cut due to personal biases or prior knowledge concerning the case. This could occur for the Boston Bombing trial as well. Since this was the first major domestic terrorism within the U.S since September 11, 2001, this is bound to cause controversies to resurface as the trial comes closer and closer. Quite honestly I'm surprised they're not moving the trial out of Boston, as there will be a plethora of biases since it hits so close to home for so many people.
