The Mentally ill not getting adequate healthcare- Amanda Cervantes p.4

Its been found that many places do not adequeatelly supply the metally ill with fair healthcare. Apart from the problem of most mentally ill, where many dont  tend to themselves like another person would or attend every appointment, many dont even have health insurance and the only attention they get is in emergency room visits. Many places seem not to regard the mentally ill as very important, like in Illinois during the recent recession, cut mental health spending by $187 million dollars, and this  occurred  nation wide. However after the Obama care was enacted, this meant that most of this could be payed for by the federal government instead of the states under the expansion of Medicaid, although signing up for Medicaid is hard for people in of itself, and does not guarantee good care. because of this many patients are being held on board, waiting, to get everything straightened out.
This lack of attention towards this group of people can really bring problems, we see the issue of federal power vs state power embedded in this issue, with which are these people better cared for? if under the state, they get their budget cut and with the federal care, many have complications applying for and qualifying for Medicaid, its a situation where they're between a rock and a hard place, either way its hard to see any improvement.

  1. It's sad that they cut the funding so much. And honestly weren't the health care expansions made to help people? It doesn't seem like they're doing a good enough job of that sometimes.

  2. I didn't realize how much funding was being cut. One of the hot button issues of our time is gun laws, and the right to bear arms protected under the 2nd Amendment. A lot of discussion has stemmed from the extreme violence we've seen around the country. But the majority of the extremists igniting these acts have some sort of mental health condition. If they had been treated for their mental illness adequately in the first place, would violent events like Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon Bombing have occurred?

  3. Dorothea Dix wouldn't like this one bit.

  4. This is very disappointing. If these were physical rather than mental illnesses there would be a huge outcry and change would be made. Mental ill can be just and some times even more dangerous than actual physical ailments and require the same attention and care.
