The past week the cost of India has been battling the massive storm, Cyclone Hudhud. So far the storm has taken the lives of six people. The cyclone's powerful winds of around 127 miles per hour and wind gusts of 155 has destructed property throughout the area. Along with storm surges up to 7 feet and heavy rains, the damage includes homes being flattened, trees being torn up, and other property being washed away. It is estimated that about 200,000 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas to higher ground or to stronger shelter. The Indian military has been dispatched to help the people in the area, and the government has already started taking measures for recovery.
The events of the Cyclone resemble the events that hit the Gulf coast of the U.S. during Hurricane Katrina. During this time many people in the New Orleans area were displaced around the country Just like the 200,000 who have been moved from their home in India. I'm glad the Indian government has taken precautions to get people to safety. A call to action was delayed in Katrina which could be a reason for such a large death toll. Just like Katrina, Hudhud is going to have a lasting affect on the people, the landscape, and market of the area. Hopefully the people of India will be able to recover and rebuild.
