The New Face of Barbie Tymie Jadagu 6th P

link to article: Barbie's new body: curvy, tall and petite - CNN.comSummary: When the Barbie Brand was released in 1959, it was a much different brand than the one we see now. The barbie we are used to seeing is impossibly slender, one race, and has often been linked to giving young girls a lower self image. According to Mattel, Barbie will now come in four body types and seven skin tones, with 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. In all, 33 dolls will roll out in stages. This change was prompted by many study's and responses from audiences that demanded a change in what is seen as the standard of beauty.
Analysis: The changing face of barbie reminds me of all the reform movements that were lead through out the gilded, progressive, and antebellum eras. For example labor unions, they led strikes, and muckrakers exposed the harmful affects of some factory practices, and this inspired changes in the laws. A parallel can be drawn to this, as people prompted barbie to make a change, and many people conducted studies, which could been seen as another for of muckraking to show the negative affects of barbie, and now, we have a new barbie that caters to almost every girl, and we are now a few steps closer to a solution for raising young girls' self esteem.

  1. Since there's a larger market for diverse dolls now, I hope more companies will follow Mattel's lead.
