Oscars Boycott // Uriel Cruz, Period 6

"What's old, white, and male? No, the answer is not Santa Claus. Or the Republican Party. The answer is Hollywood." -Cristal Wright, last Friday.

After another year of purely white Oscar nominations, some black actors have decided to just not go.
The list of black actors who are boycotting includes Spike Lee, Will Smith, and his wife Jada Pinkett. Pinkett decided to not go after finding out Concussion hadn't earned Smith a seat at the Oscars. Although Concussion wasn't actually that bad, other movies like The Revenant, Inside Out, and Mad Max: Fury Road did way better and stole Will's spot. Movies like Creed and Straight Outta Compton have been nominated but the award doesn't celebrate any black actor's performance. It's really going to be a rough night. As long as Chris Rock doesn't do anything Ricky Gervais would do, I think it'll be an ok broadcast.

This boycott reminds me of when laborers would go on strike and demand better work conditions. Unfortunately, The Man is the one in charge and there's nothing either of them can do. I don't think the law should get involved with the Oscars thing though; not getting nominated really isn't as bad as the laborers' conditions. The laborers were forced to work in dangerous and unfair conditions, black actors just weren't picked. I do think that the 2016 class should be more diverse so a variety of actors from all backgrounds have the same chance of getting nominated as everyone else. The Oscars have kind of become an all white thing and it's really not cool, but boycotting probably isn't the way to go.
