"Father charged after girl, 12, is killed by police constable"- Leah Messinger (period 1)

On January 11, 12-year-old daughter of Donald Meyer, Ciara Meyer, was accidentally shot and killed by a police man in Perry County.  The death of his daughter was not intentional, however; it was a result of, "Meyer's reckless conduct". Donald is being charged with homicide and involuntary manslaughter because according to officials he knew that his daughter was standing behind him, and he triggered a chain of events that unfortunately led to the death of Ciara. The police were originally at his apartment to serve Meyer a valid eviction notice when the police officer pointed his gun at Donald that traveled through his arm and hit Ciara killing her. Donald views this incident as the police's excuse for killing Ciara while the police believe that Donald's knowledge of his daughter standing behind him was intentional and used to his advantage.
Whatever the truth of the matter is, this accident is truly depressing. In a way, it compares to the Gilded Age's "Yellow Journalism" because if it is true that the police are trying to cover themselves up, then that is to an extent what those writers would have done to appeal to the public. It is sad that whatever happens in society might be in some way be covered up or altered to appeal to the public and make the situation appear better. Censorship is another touchy subject, but is also an important one to be considered when assessing how true things in the media are.

  1. I think this could be seen two different ways, and i agree with you. The reporters are trying to appeal to their audiences and we don't always know what is true with the media.

  2. This is very contradicting. It could go either way like you said. - Kayleigh S.
