Fighting Zika, The Spreading Virus by Brenna Hale(6th period)

El Salvador sanitation workers have launched a battle against the mosquitoes spreading the virus called Zika. Some people are referring to it as the new Ebola. Since the disease was confirmed in their country at the end of November there have been 6,000 or so suspected cases, with 2,500 since the beginning of 2016 alone. The health ministry said women should hold off becoming pregnant this year and next. This has caused huge uproars from feminists, and Morena Herrera, president of the Citizen's Group for the Decriminalization of Abortion, says that this is not enough. Women in El Salvador are not well informed enough about contraceptives. The Catholic Church inputted that the government has is telling women not to get pregnant, but are they doing enough about the Zika- carrying mosquito? A country of Catholicism is dead set on no abortion, they question whether an abortion is better than risking a child born with damaged cells. El Salvador is a poor country with limited resources in a time of great medical need.
This article was written by Katy Watson to inform readers about the Zika virus which has popped up in South America. This article does not state the symptoms or long term affects of those who contract Zika which would come in handy for someone unbeknownst to this disease, like me. It's horrible what could possibly happen to the unborn children in the mothers who have contracted Zika. This reminds me of the diseases in the slums of America during the Progressive Era, such as Cholera, Tuberculosis, and Yellow Fever. These neighborhoods we're not wealthy enough to buy what medicine there was, and they did not have the medicinal aids we take for granted today.
